On October 19, 2023, Members Trust will join over 56,000 credit unions around the world to celebrate International Credit Union (ICU) Day®. This year marks the 75th anniversary of International Credit Union Day®
Credit unions were built on the principle of “people helping people.” We’ve seen that philosophy in action for more than 100 years, with credit unions providing access to affordable financial products and striving to meet the needs of underserved communities. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness about the tremendous work that credit unions and other financial cooperatives are doing around the world and allow members to get more engaged.
Members Trust is honored to be a part of this proud tradition.
The Credit Union Difference
Although we offer many of the same products and services as other financial institutions, credit unions have some distinguishing characteristics that make us unique.
MEMBER-OWNED
You are more than just a member; you are a part owner. Credit unions are owned and controlled by the people, or members, who use our services.
Your vote counts. Members elect a volunteer board of directors to oversee the credit union.
NOT-FOR-PROFIT
Credit unions operate to promote the well-being of our members.
Any profits are returned to members in the form of reduced fees, higher savings rates, and lower loan rates.
MEMBERSHIP
Members of a credit union share a common bond, also known as the credit union’s “field of membership.”
You may be able to join based on your:
-
- Employer – Many employers sponsor their own credit unions.
- Family – Most credit unions allow members’ families to join.
- Geographic Location – Many credit unions serve anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in a particular geographic area.
- Membership in a Group – This can include things such as a place of worship, school, labor union, or homeowners’ association may qualify you to join.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Members often have shared interests and appreciate participating in an institution designed to help other members.
Credit unions may provide:
-
- financial education and outreach to consumers.
- in-school credit union branches; and
- small business needs
COOPERATIVE
The cooperative structure of credit unions creates a cycle of mutual assistance towards the common goal of the financial well-being of members.
One member’s savings becomes another member’s loan.
Come Celebrate
ICU Day highlights the many ways that credit unions across the world help members work to achieve their financial goals. This year, Members Trust invites both members and nonmembers to visit a branch on Thursday, October 19th to enjoy light refreshments and help us celebrate.
