We’re all excited to hit the road to take to the open skies for an awesome summer vacation. No matter where you go, travel can be an exciting, eye-opening experience. It’s easy to get caught up in the thrill of adventure so keep these travel safety tips in mind while you’re gone this summer.
8 Travel Tips
- Do your research
Dig around to find out the safest places to stay and incidences of crime. Know who to call or where to go in case of an emergency.
- Don’t draw attention
People who look like they’re from out of town are especially vulnerable to crime, so try to blend in as much as you can. Don’t wear flashy jewelry. Choose clothing that won’t attract attention. Be discreet when looking at maps and approach people carefully if you need to ask for directions.
Also, consider investing in protective clothing and gear that will make it more difficult for pickpockets to steal money and other personal items. Here’s a link to an article with some helpful tips about travel gear.
- Make copies of important documents
You never know when you might need a copy of your passport, driver’s license, or another form of identification. Scan these documents to save an electronic copy or print out several hard copies. That way, you won’t be scrambling to find proper documentation if you need to get home.
- Be smart about your money
It’s never a good idea to carry a large amount of cash. Instead, use local ATMs. If you absolutely must withdraw large amounts of cash at once, leave the bulk of it locked safely in your hotel or hostel and carry only what you’ll need for the day.
Never keep all of your money in one place. Keep cash and credit cards in two or three different places so that if one set is stolen you aren’t left completely empty-handed.
- Be careful with public Wi-Fi
When you use public Wi-Fi, hackers are working to steal your data including credit card or Social Security numbers. If you do need wireless Internet service, set up a virtual private network (VPN) that will allow you to access the Internet securely while traveling.
- Be aware of your surroundings
Don’t let your guard down to snap the perfect picture for your social media platforms. Keep an eye on your personal belongings at all times and use good judgment when talking to strangers. Of course, you want to meet the locals but if someone near you is acting suspiciously, or if you feel uncomfortable, leave the area immediately.
- Keep your family updated
Before you leave, let someone know your itinerary and update them on any change of plans. Make a habit of checking in with a close friend or family member back home at the end of each day.
- Monitor your accounts
Download the Mobile App so you can keep tabs on your account 24/7 and immediately report suspicious activity. In addition, download the card app so you can monitor your MTFCU credit card and status your card if lost or stolen.
